XV PEACE OUT + XV HOME

Most of the time I believe I can be known for the daily uses of certain phrases that I tend to emphasize—okay it’s definitely exaggerated— every now and again. Just as the XV’s iconic Love Always script is used as a closing in my letter writings, I have adapted using the phrase “Peace Out” as a typical goodbye (and can be guilty of also exaggerating the simple, “Byeee”—you know you can hear it!) in person. In today’s social culture everyday phrases are known to pop up in casual conversation. With a laundry list of phrases, today I would like to take a moment to appreciate the farewell phrase, “Peace Out “. However, be sure to keep an eye out for some phrase teasers to what’s to come about this summer!

A little moment to hone in on some etymology, in the 1960’s, one of the typical greetings opened with the phrase “Peace” and the standard phrase in ending a conversation via two-way radios ended in “Over and out.” As we move forward to the 1970’s, these phrases and influences began to appropriate through cultural movements. Subcultures, whether it be from fashion to religion to political, play a part in significant trends that took shape—as did the phrases at the time. With so much happening from the 60’s to the 70’s, the setting at the time began the era of the hippies and bohemian subcultures.

So let’s tangent for a hot second, if you haven’t yet seen the Netflix documentary, Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, I highly recommend watching it. Here’s my view on T-Swifters, her commitment to all she does has definitely paid off. I mostly enjoy her commitment to country and her current genre. Her passion for standing up for what she wholeheartedly believes in and tackling topics that she wants to shed light on is just something that made me appreciate her more as an artist. If you watch this documentary you see the development of her song writing of Only the Young. In essence, the backstory of this song is just the pick-me-up you may need nowadays. A moment of hope for the future.

It could be a stretch, but to me I see how the same principles begin to relate within the timeframe of the 60’s and 70’s to today. Subculture is constantly being evolved as time goes on. That’s the nature of it, right? A movement of the younger generation (of that time) influenced by beliefs with a yearning for something. Whether it be peace, harmony, or self expression, whatever the case may be, there is a passion for something one believes in. Today, I think we are still pushing through similar situations. From equality and feminism, or even the simple notion of acceptance, there is always something that gets brought about through subculture through the times.

Now, I’m not going to go all Wikipedia and go into the phrase of “Peace Out”—for sure musical influences are integral areas in which appropriation of this phrase is used. I do believe that there’s so much to how we can relate to this phrase.

No matter it’s form, this farewell or goodbye can become a mantra for some. Now, there’s so many other adjacencies that relate to context. For example, it could determine a sign-off or a departure. Overall, it is something that we all will go through once and awhile—some more than others, but that’s life. We are constantly challenged to be the best version of ourselves. You are the owner of your life. What you do with it and how you go about it is your decision. Remember that—I’ve been blessed (I know, bless this mess, am I right? haha) to have been reminded of this from close friends and family and it is always reassuring.
